As a practitioner, I adhere to the following standards:

  1. I  am responsible for fostering effective communication with you.
  2. My primary responsibility is to hold the container for you. Within the container, my chief focus and primary ethical responsibility is for your welfare.
  3. The objectives and parameters of the relationship shall be discussed with you by me so that you can make informed decisions.
  4. My relationship with you is temporary; always within the context of the container.
  5. I shall recognize the boundaries and limitations of my competence. I will not attempt to use methods outside the range of my training and experience. If I think you will benefit from such methods, I will refer you to such a provider.
  6. If I have a professional degree, certificate, license, or accreditation, which applies to other than my core practice, the function of my core practice shall be primary. However, if there is an agreement between me and you that other methods and techniques, within my competence, are appropriate for your welfare, I may use these additional skills.
  7. If a situation arises that would normally require consultation with another type of provider (including, but not limited to, a mental health clinician or medical provider), I  am responsible for taking appropriate but reasonable action for your welfare.
  8. My responsibility for your welfare continues until it is terminated by mutual agreement between me and you, or you voluntarily terminate the relationship.
  9. Your identity, and all information received about you in the container, shall not be communicated outside the container, without your express permission, except under the following conditions:
    1. When there is a clear and imminent danger to you or to individuals or society, and then only to the appropriate professional colleagues and public authorities.
    2. For the purpose of professional consultation with appropriate professional colleagues, if the identities of individuals are disguised to protect identity.
    3. For presentation of information to professional or lay groups, if the identities of individuals are disguised to protect confidentiality.
  10. I am responsible for taking adequate and reasonable precautionary measures against the transmission of communicable diseases and infections.
  11. It is my responsibility to ensure protection against conception.
  12. I shall recognize that effectiveness in the profession depends, in part, on my  maintaining independent, personally-fulfilling social, intimate, and sexual relationships.
  13. In order to maintain optimum professionalism, I am responsible for:
    1. obtaining relevant continuing education;
    2. seeking prompt and effective help when personal problems arise; and
    3. seeking peer support on cases as needed.
